It’s been over a year since the botched paint job on my Dad’s truck. The one where he bought single stage unknowingly and it got sprayed as base coat clear coat.

So Dad finally got it all sanded and ready to spray, so we went for it last night.

Laid down a good coat of white sealer to level everything and keep from issue:

Kinja'd!!!

That went wonderfully and we let it dry/tack for it’s recommended 20 mins. Then we moved on to the White Pearl base coat. Initially it laid out beautifully, but after the 15 min tack time, things went to hell:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It did this bad enough on the passenger bedside that the paint was coming off in a big sheet:

Kinja'd!!!

It’s reacted all the way down through the factory paint, that is the bare metal showing.

We’re going to try sanding it out again and give it one more try, but I already have a feeling it won’t end well.

What is causing this? Are you going to have to resand the whole truck again?

Thinking it’s the still likely uncured single stage paint under the new stuff.

We’re likely going to have to take it down to bare metal and start completely over.

Oh geez... I can imagine how disheartening it would be if that happened to me. So much time and material wasted.

I saw in other comments that you replied to that now you’ll have t take it down to the bare metal.  Such a pain.

Why did it have to get repainted in the first place? Just curious. The paint on these is SUPER thick from the factory.

Seen multiple times, often referred to as paint “frying” in shops. Incompatible paint systems will do that. Even if the single stage is 100% cured, the solvents in the new paint can “reactivate” the old paint. You might be able to let everything set up, sand the truck (not to bare metal, but to cut the top down and put a scratch in the material), and get a good coat of primer on the truck to lock in, or essentially bury the offending materials.

Dash, doorhandle and bondo may also have some suggestions for this one.

Dude: Feelz I got.

This is why I dread the thought of painting a car, unless it’s with a roller. I had one experience many years ago and it didn’t go as badly as your project with your dad, but it was an expensive fail.

Also, Good Morning.

Maybe try an epoxy primer?

One of these years, I’ll take the plunge with some Rustoleum and an Wagner power sprayer.

How does that even happen.

Did you accidentally mix it with marine stripper?

This paint job has been giving us issue since the initial botch. That’s what happens when people sell you the wrong materials.

Generally though, my painting experiences have been nothing but positive.

Fixed rockers/cab corners, clear coat was peeling on the upper surfaces, Dad wanted it white pearl.

Maybe it’s just a white thing, but this was not thick from factory either.

Still uncured single stage paint underneath got reactivated by the solvents in the new base coat which caused everything to lift.

Righto. I rarely see GMT800s with paint damage.

This one one of the very few I’d ever seen with clear coat peeling, although it originally came from the south, so sun damage would be my bet there.

Needing repair due to rust however seems to be a non stop thing up here....

After stripping it will be sprayed all with the right stuff, so it will be business as usual at that point.

Yeah that all needs to come off before any paint is going to stick proper.

In the Southwest, cars that live outside in the high- elevation desert will often start having clear coat failure at 5-6 years old unless the paint is really taken care of.
